This is a tip from Sean Willis for making adjustments to fully automatic machines that spin containers.

Note – Cap portion assembly must be pushed into uppermost position when adjusted or replaced.

  1. Loosen set screw on side of bushing and push assembly up to limit, then tighten set screw while held in this upper position.
  2. Compare to caps on either side of the one being adjusted to be sure they are at same position and level with each other.

The new front fill adjust for our large 8 pump fillers has proven beneficial for customers that have installed it. The individual fine fill adjust settings are now actuated via a single 180 degree tool from the front of the machine rather than the rear. Range of fine adjustment is estimated at+/- 5% of the fill volume vs. approximately +/- 2% for the existing design.

Bosch Summer Shutdown Summer shutdown is closing in quickly on many of you. This is a great opportunity to perform required maintenance, calibration, training or upgrades required to keep your packaging machinery operating at peak performance.

Shutdown from late June to mid August is one of our busiest times of the year for service and parts delivery. Our schedules for both of these tend to fill up quickly from here on out. As a concerned supplier to your organization, we highly recommend that all parts orders be placed early and service scheduled in the near future for best availability.

Bosch Packaging Services has Preventative Maintenance kits for our most popular machinery, and we can custom create kits for any machine in the field. We also have Technicians located throughout North America at your disposal to perform Preventative Maintenance or any other required service function.

If there is any way that we can assist you with shutdown planning for Bosch Parts or Service, please do not hesitate to contact us at (763) 424-4700.

By Brian Kelsey

Like many other facets of Bosch Packaging in Minneapolis, the Electrical Engineering department has seen its paradigm shift on multiple occasions as of late. Gone are the days of simple logic based machines run solely on truth tables supported by simple on-off mechanisms. Electrical Engineering today at Bosch Packaging North America has evolved into a multi-faceted group of tasks and responsibilities that have evolved with our customers’ needs. These requirements are ever growing in size and sophistication.

One particular requirement on the rise is adherence to FDA Title 21 CFR Part 11 of the Code of Federal Regulations. This is commonly referred to as Part 11 and it requires an OEM manufacturer such as Bosch to implement additional controls beyond the scope of controlling our equipment. Part 11 defines the criteria under which electronic records and electronic signatures are considered to be trustworthy, reliable and equivalent to paper records. This basically means that in addition to a safe and reliable set of controls, we must also provide a system that audits the operator’s interaction with the equipment as well as maintaining machine specific records such as alarms and recipe parameters over long periods of time. In musical terms, this would equate to the beginning lyrics of the popular Police song “Every Breath You Take”. Like the song, our systems log every move you make, every step you take as they truly are “watching you”. How do we accomplish this, you may ask.

By leveraging additional Microsoft off-the-shelf products such as SQL Server Database, we have written a set of software modules into our HMIs that are able to accomplish this reporting/auditing. These modules have been written in a pre-emptive effort to prepare for the inevitable federal mandate. With strategic planning, this was accomplished with adding zero cost in additional software. A trip to Germany allowed comparison of our solution to that of our Crailsheim counterparts with additional findings to ensure a basic continuity for our shared customers. We now offer a solution for our customers who have a Part 11 requirement that adds virtually no additional hardware or software costs.

Other accomplishments to meet our customers’ needs include:

  • Vision systems to accommodate the high stopper detection requirements of our capper customers. Fully versatile and embedded into our existing systems without the need for additional computing power in most cases.
    -
  • Advanced virtualization of operating systems using VMWare to consolidate hardware and provide near instantaneous failover to redundant hardware for near zero downtime. Our customers using this technology could have an entire computer fail and the machine operator would never know it happened. This architecture is fully supported by both Rockwell Automation as well as Invensys Wonderware.
    -
  • Created RFID login system which can be added to many of our recent customers’ machines. This allows the user to swipe a badge to authenticate his/herself instead of having to enter a username/password combination on the touch screen. This can foster valuable production time especially when electronic signatures are employed.
    -
  • Researched and implemented higher level of safety which is integrated into existing control architecture reducing the number of software packages our customers need to support the equipment.

Preventive Maintenance Solutions Overview
Anybody familiar with a fast-paced industrial production environment knows that preventive maintenance is a key component of achieving a high Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). By taking machines out of production for a short time in regular intervals, wear parts can be replaced and necessary adjustments made. This in turn prevents unplanned downtime, which can be very disruptive in an integrated packaging line, and potentially much harder to repair.

Preventive Maintenance Agreements
A basic building block of our preventive maintenance solution is Preventive Maintenance Agreements. Through regular service visits, a Preventive Maintenance Agreement ensures that the right periodic maintenance is done at the right time. This does not replace maintenance by plant staff, but enhances it with expert advice and knowledge transfer to plant mechanics and operators.

Preventive Maintenance Kits
In addition to the Preventive Maintenance Agreement, we offer specific Preventive Maintenance Kits. These kits contain all parts that need to be replaced at a certain interval, for example bearings, springs, etc. Most kits are available in two versions, one for more frequent minor maintenance (typically every six-twelve months), and one for major maintenance (typically every 3-5 years).

The following kits are available (click for details):

TL Large 8 Pump Filler

VRK Capping Machines

GKF / DMW Capsule Filling Machines New – GKF Capsylon kits added

KKE Checkweighing Machines
